Along with Sazon, Adobo seasoning is a staple for seasoning meat or chicken and fish in Caribbean cooking. We always put a dash in for flavor. When I found out how easy it was to make your own with ingredients we already have in the pantry, I thought I’d give it a try. Home made spice mix with no extras. Here’s the blend that I think tastes the best from my experiments.
What you need
- Coffee grinder – to blend everything together
- glass jar with lid – to store your seasoning
- 3 Tblsp Garlic Powder
- 3 Tblsp table salt
- 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Combine your herbs and spices in a bowl, pour that mixture in to a coffee grinder and grind the mixture together till it makes a smooth powder. Pour this mixture in to a glass jar and this will last in your pantry, for up to a year.
The store bought Adobo seasonings contain anti-clumping agents and sometimes MSG. You will notice your home made mixture will cake together as it sits, that would be why the big companies put anti-caking agents in their mixture.
Once the mixture cakes together, use a chop stick or a fork to loosen the measure you want to cook with.
Adobo seasoning is used often in seasoning proteins, put a splash in when you season your meat.
